Under 16’s Narrabeen Tour 2017

Don Fruedenstein Memorial Shield

The boys from Bowra Under 16's boarded the bus driven by Jeff Galvin on Friday morning to head to the Northern Beaches of Sydney. After a vigorous training session watched on by the opposition then a cold shower, the boys headed over to the Narrabeen Surf Club for a BBQ and the jersey presentation. It was great to walk into a room packed of supporters of the game and very welcoming smiles and what seemed like old friends.

Presenting the jerseys to both teams was rugby league great Mr Noel Kelly, a Kangaroos hard man named in the team of the century. Also Mark Gerard who was coached by Don Fruedenstien at Narrabeen in the day then went on to play for the Waratah's and now playing overseas.

Zack and Josh Fruedenstein were busy shaking hands and emceeing the night.

The next morning the Narrabeen Sharks Committee ladies cooked up a storm for the boys while setting up for a big day of rugby league from under 6's through to first grade.

The Game

After the boys went to the beach for a swim and worked on their tans it was 3pm and time for the game. After a minutes silence for the late great Don Fruedenstein, Narrabeen kicked off. The Bowra boys dug deep and showed the opposition they were not there for a holiday. 16-4 half time score.

Second half Bowra kept up the great attack and defence. Full-time score 34-4.

Tries to Beau Langford, Connor Peterkin, Lachie Jones, Blake Brunsdon, Calijah Craig and Zane Doolan 5 tries from 6 and Man of the Match. A great game to start the season.

A big thankyou to our sponser Ian And Maree Watson from Coast Cert for the playing kits for the boys. Coaches Spike and RJ (and Doot for bringing Spike down) Jeff Galvin for organizing the weekend and driving the bus. The president of the Narrabeen Club, Questo , Mrs Carmel Fruedenstein, Shane Bullock, Bluey Rousel, Ladies in the canteen Mick Atkins for towing the trailer and Fortade Earthmoving and parents who travelled for a great weekend.

Message to Under 16's

We haven't had success yet; don't let that stop us. Keep turning up for each other. The Wall is about to get knocked down.

Very proud of the way in which you boys stick together. The respect, attitude and mateship this team possesses is awesome. Lift your heads......there's plenty of fight in us yet...

Bowra travelled to Sawtell and went down 26-0. Made lots of errors and gave away lots of penalties. It wasn't our best performance, however.....we never gave up, we remained positive and kept competing till the end.

v Sawtell 18 June

Wow what a comeback!

Jackson takes the ball from the kick off and charges through for a 40 meter run. Unfortunately Sawtell dislodge the ball and get then scrum feed. Three tackles later they're in, 6 nil to Sawtell. This was only the start of more errors in the first half, where now we find ourselves down 24 – 0. Half time is 6 mins away when we pack a scrum 20 meters from Sawtell's line. A beautifully worked scrum move produces our first try by Luke Ormandy and Mitchell Morison kicks the conversion from the sideline, 24 – 6.

Halftime the boys heads are up and pat each other on the back. "Let's stop the errors" they say "We can do this, come on!"

Well- do it they did. The errors dried up, they tackled hard and ran harder, they started to believe, believe in their talent, believe they are good enough to win.

They were able to stop multiple attempts by Sawtell in the corners, all but one. Full time 30 – 22.

Very proud of ALL of the boys, great team effort, family, friends and supporters all impressed. We are good enough, the wins will come.
